September Meeting: Walking the Trail
Really interesting speaker coming up for the September meeting. Dennis Blanchard, a man who walked the Appalachian Trail from end to end doing QRP the whole way. He’s making a special trip to Atlanta to talk to the ARC!
Here’s what his website, http://www.threehundredzeroes.com/ says about him: When siblings promise to do something together when they ‘grow up,” is it just wishful dreaming? When war and a Purple Heart Medal shatter those dreams, should the surviving brother continue? The desire to honor that promise to my brother haunted me for over forty years. At long last, when there were no more excuses, I ventured out onto the Appalachian Trail to fulfill that youthful promise.
Three Hundred Zeroes describes my adventure on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) as it meanders for almost 2,200 miles (3,500 km) through some of the most awe inspiring, remote, vibrant woodlands and mountains in the eastern United States. Maddeningly indirect at times, the trail wanders aimlessly from Springer Mountain in Northern Georgia, to Mount Katahdin, in central Maine. During my journey on the A.T. I experienced encounters with every conceivable form of plant life, vegetation, tree and animal from the minuscule pygmy shrew to the titans of the north woods, the American black bear and moose.
The meeting is Thursday September 2, 7:30pm at the American Red Cross, on Monroe Drive. See you there!

Drake ARC Club Field Activity – Saturday August 21, 2010
We had a wonderful time Saturday. Originally we had planned to setup at Eby Road, upon arrival at 0830 the shelter
was in use for the entire day.
WW4MEL checked the backup site at Springboro’s North Park Shelter A and we moved the event there. This was our 1st time operating there.
The shelter was very nice, had commercial power and kept us very dry even with the rain we had. We had batteries with us since the Eby Road location does not have commercial power.
In attendance was:
WN8ATM – Mark
WW4MEL – Mel
KB8ASC – Bill
NY8T – Gary
K8BA – John
WA8DTU – Don
WN8ATM brought out a new antenna that did very well, the iPortable Lightning Rods, WW4MEL made contacts to Europe on it. WN8ATM made several QRP contacts.
Bands were not that great, but everyone had a chance to use the multiple antenna’s that were there. Once again it was a YAESU clinic with no ICOM (I Can Only Monitor) HF equipment making the trip outdoors to the site.
We started approx 0930 and finished at 230 then went to Subway for lunch for a great discussion about batteries and solar power.

About this Blog
As of about 9:30 last night (8/6) there’s a new administration for the Atlanta Radio Club. By taking a couple of the existing leaders and mixing in a couple of new faces, we’ve got 5 folks ready to work for the club and do things as we head toward our 100th anniversary.
We couldn’t have done it without the prior administration of Bill Perkins working so hard and giving us a foundation to grow from, so hats off there.
One of the things we have heard loud and clear over the last few weeks is that we want to get the word out more. As Secretary and Public Information Officer much of that will fall to me. So we’ve started this blog and we’ve added a Twitter account (@ATLRadioClub) to out list of communications tools. We’re also on Yahoo Groups, Linked in and Facebook. As a team we discussed supporting 73s.org because we want to support the ham community, so we picked here vs other blog sites.
I’m not the only one who’ll be posting here. Watch for these other officers to post as well as topics of interest come up. Here’s the list of officers and emails:
President Bert Bruner – KE4FOV
president @ atlantaradioclub.com
Vice President Newton White – K0NWT
VicePresident @ atlantaradioclub.com
Secretary Jim Reed – N4BFRs
Secretary @ atlantaradioclub.com
Treasurer Brian Tucker – WD4DX
Treasurer @ atlantaradioclub.com
Member-at-large Chris Fowler – K4FH
Repeater Trustee
k4fh @ atlantaradioclub.com
See you around the Internet. 73’s!

Sunday Tech Session: Repeaters & Radio Programming
KB4KFT has been doing Sunday Tech Sessions the last few years as a way to help educate the ham community. He’s got a great session coming up for new hams.
“Repeaters and Radio Programming Programming”. Topics will include, but not be limited to, repeaters,
offsets, PL tones, CTCSS & Tone Squelch, DCS, IRLP, EchoLink and
Dstar. This is a perfect opportunity for new Techs to get some
hands-on help setting up their radios and getting an understanding
how all the various repeater options work together. Also a good
opportunity for anyone interested in playing around with their
radios to see what they can do with them. Exploring and trying new
things is always encouraged in our sessions. For instance, have you
ever set a DCS to see what it does… you can here when you get
someone to try it out with you.
Event is at PDK Airport in Atlanta, Sunday at 3:00pm Talk-in on 146.520 this time.
