Hiking with a Radio

Journeys, the official magazine of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, has a 1-page article in the May-June issue by Dennis Blanchard, K1YPP, entitled “Hiking with Ham.” In it, he describes his experience backpacking the entire trail using an ATS-3 CW kit that fit inside an Altoids tin. His antenna was a 50-foot wire and he carried a homemade battery pack that he also used to charge his cell phone. The article has a picture of his set-up on a rock. It has given me inspiration to bring a radio on my backpacking trips.

I started hiking after I got into geocaching. I think it is just a plain smart idea to take a rig along with you while hiking. While on the trails or deep in the woods, I have found that I do not always have cell service but can get out on the radio with a telescoping antenna. This could come in very handy if you come along a situation that warrants help. Not to mention it helps pass the time from one cache to another!
